NC Reads featuring "The Girls We Sent Away" by Meagan Church In-Person
Join FOLSOI for NC READS, featuring
The Girls We Sent Away by Meagan Church
Participants are encouraged to read the book ahead of time and come ready to engage in conversation with author Meagan Church and UNCW Professor Jennifer Le Zotte as we discuss autonomy, belonging, and what happens when the illusions of life-as-you-know-it fall away.
Meagan Church is the Southern indie bestselling author of The Girls We Sent Away. She writes to tell grounded stories that explore the complexity of human nature. Her historical fiction chronicles the plight and fight of unheard voices of the past. Meagan received a B.A. in English from Indiana University, built a career as a storyteller and freelance writer, and currently is an adjunct for Drexel University’s MFA in creative writing program.
It’s the 1960s in North Carolina and Lorraine Delford has it all – an upstanding family, a perfect boyfriend, brains, a promising future, and an idyllic home complete with a white picket fence. But when this darling girl-next-door gets pregnant, she’s forced to learn firsthand the realities that keep women grounded. The Library Journal calls The Girls We Sent Away an “engaging, shocking, heart-wrenching story, (as) readers are pulled along with Lorraine through the ups and downs of her pregnancy, optimistic for her future but saddened by its likely outcome.”
Jennifer Le Zotte is an associate professor of American History and the Director of Public History at The University of North Carolina, Wilmington. She has written about material culture in 19th and 20th century. Her books and articles reach both academic and popular audiences with publications in Smithsonian.com, CNN Opinion, and Slate.
