What types of materials should I bring for scanning?

Unique items that tell the story of your life, your home, your neighborhood, your church, or your business, such as:

●    Photographs

●    Scrapbooks

●    Newsletters

●    Church bulletins and publications

●    Event fliers

●    Political signs (small), buttons, fliers, etc.

●       Family histories

●       Local restaurant menus

●       Letters and postcards you don’t mind sharing publicly

●       Publications from local civic groups, etc.

●       Items that are not under copyright (examples of copyrighted items are books, newspapers, magazines)

How long will it take?

This depends on how many people are participating. If a lot of people are waiting, we may have to limit the number of items to be scanned.

If you are willing, we may work with you to see if we can “borrow” the items, scan them in the library, and return them to you or arrange a private meeting at a later date.

You will get a copy. They will also be placed in an online archive that the public can access at https://digitalcollections.uncw.edu/ and https://sites.google.com/site/researchsouthporthistory/ We will ask you to sign a release form that allows us to put the items online, but you do not give up any other rights. We will also not make your name public if you don’t want us to.

We may ask if we can record you while you describe the items. This is just for reference and to keep us from making mistakes and these recordings will be deleted once we have the details on your items. The recordings will not be made public and we will not record unless you give permission.
